Making Money Online

One of the things that fascinate me to no end is how people make money online. It’s a deep and complex topic and still quite a mystery. Frankly, I’m still baffled at how people end up earning a full time salary off of blogs and forums. That’s not being skeptical but more based on my own experience and failure to even get a glimpse of similar levels. Still, I can say that I’ve spent enough time thinking about it to summarize it. Maybe some day I’ll crack the code myself.

Essentially, there are two ways to make money online: content and services. Of course, it’s not quite cut and dry as that. Many areas overlap but you’re either one or the other. The really big players use one to generate the other and usually it’s all part of the greater system. Google serves up search results and then uses that to leverage ad revenue. You could argue that it’s both content-driven and a service at the same time.

Still it’s kind of hard for me to get past the mental divide so understand how some of the more so-called famous sites are doing so well. These are mainly the sites we see in the personal realm. A lot of them just look like any other generic template-driven site. Lest you think I’m bitter I’m just being curious and really want to know the secret that they’re not telling us.
