I want to write a greasemonkey script that you can install on people's computers that re-writes google search results on medical terms with "go see a doctor".

Baron, What I find troubling is the "See Also" section on each Wikipedia entry. I set out for one piece of information, and end up reading 10 articles because I must "see also" them. . . haha.

Brian,
I agree that being effective with search will help you become more effective at whatever you do and even more well-informed but would it make you smarter? It's sort of like solving a rubik's cube on your own or googling it and mastering the technique. You may still end up with two people that can solve a rubik's cube but my bet would be on the first person even if the person didn't solve it.

Jeremiah,
That's so true. Especially since they got links to other wikipedia sections all over the place. It's almost like "the other google".

I don't know about Google, but Wikipedia. . . that's addicting. I look up EVERYTHING on Wikipedia. If I run into a term I've never heard, if I need to answer a question on a certain subject, my first stop is always Wikipedia.

I think that developing good google searching techniques can actually make you smarter. As floods of new websites come online every day, even google's algorithms are going to have trouble separating the wheat from the chaff, especially in remote niches of content. Being able to search wisely and minimize unwanted results should keep you sharp. I like the test of having to use the "I'm feeling lucky" button to hone your skills. Even if you have wikipedia implanted in your brain you still have to know what to do with it.
