The Mobile Handset business is a pretty rough one and Motorola and Nokia are throwing a lot of $ at it fighting for their lives to win. Apple is taking a big risk with the iPhone, because its very expensive endeavor for them and it really has to be so far beyond the others to justify it's high price tag and win market share. It's not an impossible feat for Steve Jobs and Co., but it's a risk for the company that perhaps may be too much of a distraction from their core competencies. I don't think I've bought anything by Apple since the 80's (can't bring myself to pay twice the money for something just because it looks like it's made out of plastic). In the UK the mobile operators tend to give you the phone for free in exchange for the contract, so it's finally my chance to try an Apple product without feeling like a sucker. It will be interesting to see how the iPhone pans out. And it is a little miffy to realize the change from Apple Computer to no Computer may mean less emphasis on all that us Mac users who've stuck through Apple through thick and thin really love: the freaking Mac.
