Peety,
Great minds think alike.

engtech,
I love their book and the ideas behind the framework (Ruby on Rails) that they developed. However, their product is anything but stellar (although it has passionate fans, I think they are over-rated).

"So less features is almost never the answer, it’s all about giving the users less choices. Only confront them with the choices they need to know."

You speak the truth but sometimes arrogance gets in the way of really nailing it good. The only thing worse than a feature-bloated product is something forced onto you by some pretentious prick that seems to know exactly "what you want".

Rusty,
I like the duality of Stumble too. Something for the casual (just keep stumbling) and an almost hidden universe for those that visit SU.com. They seem to have a good thing going.

Mindspeakr,
That's so true. I think it's also related to the fact that developers need to try something new to prevent them from burning out. Sometimes this prevents them from polishing the aspects of the site that need the most attention instead of going on a journey into the unknown and ruining the product.

All good thoughts. I would only add that when adding new features, it helps drive adoption if they build on existing functionality. That may seem obvious but not all sites seem to approach it that way and new often means completely different. That's okay too, if there's some master strategy for tying them all together cohesively at some point.

Ya, it's so true. Ask all the stumble users what they use, I bet 90% will tell you all they do is press 'stumble'. They don't even know they have a page on Stumble Upon.

But lets not fotget that features are always nice for advanced users. You need to supply them with what they need.

I love this subject.

Users only use 20% of the features, but the prob is that it's always a different 20%.

So less features is almost never the answer, it's all about giving the users less choices. Only confront them with the choices they need to know.

You might really like this e-book: http://gettingreal.37signals.com/toc.php
