Time for a One Month Transformation

I somehow managed to come across this dude’s blog and it just happened to coincide with the very moment I was having an existential crisis of sorts. I think all of us have these moments where we wake up and look into the mirror and are seized by this irresistible urge to reach through the glass and strangle ourselves whilst screaming, “what the hell have you done to yourself!”. Ever since taking a break from my fitness after getting jumper’s knee, I pretty much went on a downward spiral but even before that I’d say I was more or less “maintaining” rather than breaking new ground. Even aside from fitness, I’ve let too many aspects of my life slide into mediocrity.

Adam Waters’ transformation into this is nothing short of amazing. After embarking on a fitness transformation at the age of 32 he looks better than most will ever look at any point in their lives, including some athletes in their prime. It gives me pause to re-evaluate what I’m doing right now. The answer’s pretty clear. He’s applying all the qualities I’m not exercising right now: intensity, focus, and perseverance.

Intensity

Intensity is probably the biggest driver of any success. It’s a form of concentration that goes beyond normal. All the greatest achievers are intense, so much so that they burn themselves and everything around them. We’ve all seen athletes engrossed in the moment, shutting out world around them or the artist, with a downright frightening glare taking on the canvas. When you apply intensity, you multiply yourself into somebody that transcends the average you, an instant transformation. Even in our daily lives we sometimes see a friend suddenly transform into something else right before our eyes when given a chance to do something they truly excel at. One minute they’re some slacker without any redeeming qualities the next moment they’re shining like a demi-god.

Focus

I distinguish focus from intensity as the object of your intensity. If you are not focused on the right goals, all the intensity in the world will probably drive you to destruction or a heartbreaking dead end. Focusing on what needs to be focused is a shortcut that combined with intensity will take you to new heights.

Perseverance

You can be the most focused and intense person for a week but then slip back into sloth and everything will be for naught. The greatest achievers are always without exception workaholics, some driven to mental instability from their pursuits. Someone who is focused, intense, and constantly striving toward the goal of betterment will continue to multiply the fruits of their labor until they reach the peak of their existence, joining a circle of achievers where admission is scarce.

So, for this month I’m holding myself to task by working out more, not eating junk, reading books, and cutting out slack time. I’m planning a big social event in November that will define a lot of what’s to come for me personally and I intend to make it the start of an amazing journey. We’ll see how it goes.

I wont be posting any pics but will write on my progress for sure.

So Much for the iPhone Revolutionizing Local Social Networks

When the iphone 3G first came out, one of the big promising areas was supposed to be location-aware social networks as evidenced by the release of native applications by Loopt and Whrrl among others. The fact is we’re still waiting for a revolution to happen. Maybe if everybody in the world had iPhones and also went through the trouble to install these apps, there’d be a fighting chance but otherwise you can’t expect much. Maybe if the Facebook iPhone app with their millions of users decided to leverage their presence to facilitate more location aware connection services but then again Facebook is a “social utility” and not a social network so they say.

The iPhone itself is not going to revolutionize location aware social networking. It certainly puts the internet in the pocket and spare batteries in your other pocket but location aware social services have quite a few challenges to overcome.

True Ubiquity

For any location based social network to succeed it has to be by definition available everywhere be it your desktop, cell phone, iPhone, PDA, etc. It could be browser based but then you need some way of making it aware of your location. The iPhone would be perfect for this if everyone had an iPhone but that’s unlikely to happen, unless you only roll with hardcore mac fans then it might mean something.

Push Notifications without being Pushy

Another difficulty with location awareness is that you and your circle are more or less on the move throughout the day. Location-based services need to get that information to your friends without it being overwhelming or irrelevant. It wouldn’t mean much to know that Jenny is looking to have casual drinks around Times Square when you crossed to New Jersey state line on the way home from work. Pushing information to the right users when they want it is more of a challenge than meets the eye. Making the service too tame means less opportunities for the social networks to have any meaning but too much means alienating your users.

Privacy

Knowing where someone is at any given moment poses all kinds of security risks unless you’re talking about close friends and/or colleagues where you have roughly the same amount of information on each other. If enough of your activity is logged people will eventually notice patterns whether they try to or not.

At the end of the day, we already have an ad hoc local social network, it’s called your office, your school, your home, and we have the ultimate social application for location aware networking also known as the cell phone. It’ll be hard for location based social networks to gain momentum on providing users real opportunities to reach out to others in the here and offer something that plain cell phones don’t.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (film)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was like a bad trip. You really don’t get much in terms of a coherent plot it’s just the progression of a drug trip set on a timeline. The first thing that strikes me is Benicio del Toro’s beer belly in the opening scene, rubbing his tummy lovingly as he chugs beer along with a mix of illicit drugs. Johnny Depp is Raul Duke, a fictionalized version of Hunter S Thompson (the writer of the novel which it is based upon), and Benicio is the “Samoan” lawyer who is really Mexican so far as anyone can tell.

Benicio does a fabulous job playing the hardcore druggie lawyer, a part he extensively researched and even gained 19 pounds for before filming. Menacing and unstable from drug-induced paranoia, the lawyer stumbles from trouble to trouble, wielding a jackknife whenever confronted with harsh reality. He has a couple choice scenes mixed with rage, fear, and uncertainty.

Depp mimics Hunter S Thompson quite well but the Depp’s narrative, based on passages from the book, is what really shines aside from Benicio’s acting. I suppose the best thing about the movie is that it made me want to read the novel because I know it would be better.
