Faking Mindful Meditation with an Eyemask and Ear Plugs

Yesterday, my brain was fried from a weekend of coding. Saturday went great, Sunday just dragged on. At the end of the day I hadn’t really accomplished much more other than confusing myself further on Cocoa development so I decided to take a break and catch up on my untended RSS feeds. And that’s when I came across the talk below on mindful meditation.

I’ve dabbled with relaxation techniques, particularly the “relaxation response” as something offering the full benefits of meditation without any religious overtones. As Dr. Kabat-Zinn mentions in the video, we all have this expectation that it’ll sharpen us with a “samurai mind” that cuts through the clouds with infinite clarity when in fact it should really about “doing nothing” just as it’s advertised.

To make a long story short, I was tired and exhausted so I decided to give it a try, when I had the time which I quickly realized was never. One of the problems with meditation is falling asleep if you are sleep deprived. I can definitely raise my hand to that. So I decided to just bust out a nice set of ear plugs and something to cover my eyes with an eye mask (from a flight I was on) and just quietly lie down pushing away all thoughts like slowly turning down a stereo’s volume.

Today I woke up pleasantly surprised and refreshed on so little sleep. Let’s see if I can do it again tonight! :)

Lost Season 1 Post Mortem

I kind of dismissed Lost after watching the pilot episode. A plane crashes into an island and over 40 people survive? Including a dog? Engine’s still spinning on a beach and sucks up a hapless survivor to make a milkshake. I pretty much gave up on the show right there.

Then people around me kept watching it and recommending it so reluctantly, I started checking it out again. One thing about these hit shows that I felt, whether it’s Prison Break or Supernatural is, I don’t think these show creators were prepared for their shows to last more than one season. I get the same feeling with Lost, I like how the stories interweave and go back between their lives on the island and what led them there. But at the same time it gets a little crazy with polar bears and spirits. There may even be aliens. It’s like the producers are throwing a bunch of stuff out there so they can check up on the internet to see what people are saying and go from there.

I also find myself kind of detached from the characters. Jack was kinda cool but then he started getting a bit bossy and overwhelmed. Kate’s past is just way too dirty for me to give her any sympathy. Locke is a nut job. Sahid is cool but he’s too much of a British gentleman type (I don’t know why they cast an Indian as an Arab), Hurley’s funny but that’s about it. I kinda like Sawyer but I can’t really explain why. It’s amazing how the flight managed to assemble such an entourage of people with very serious issues.

I’m a little confused after season one. I guess I’ll just have to give it another try next season.

The Digg Comeback and the Fall of Tech

I haven’t really checked digg out in a really, really long time.  I rarely hang around too long when I do.  I did notice however the lack of tech stories not only on the front page but in the queue.  The decline of tech on Digg started a long time ago when they started alienating their core users, the infamous “top digg user” list that they trumpeted for such a long time until they decided to disown the whole concept of ranking users and thereby taking away their main incentive to contribute.

Metrics went down significantly until their recent resurgence as a simple news aggregation service for anything and I’m sure it’ll continue to rise.  Still feel a bit of nostalgia for the old community but I know I wont find it anywhere on Digg.
